If you have still to decide where you and your family will vacation, you are encouraged to consider the family fun that you and your family could have in St. Thomas.

St. Thomas is probably most known for its tropical weather. St. Thomas is situated in the Virgin Islands. Many families mistakenly believe that St. Thomas, and other islands located in Caribbean, are just for couples looking to have a romantic vacation. Yes, St. Thomas is known for its romantic environment and atmosphere; but, the island has a number of “family friendly,” activities that you and your children may find exciting.

The good news for families is that there are a number of popular vacation resorts that are designed with adults and children in mind. The resorts are often referred to as “family friendly,” resorts.

The activities and events that can be found on a “family friendly,” resort will vary. Different St. Thomas resorts offer different onsite activities, facilities, and services. Despite the fact that no two resorts are the same, there are a number of common activities that you may find available at most “family friendly,” St. Thomas resorts. Build Your Road to Gardening Landscaping Jobs and Horticulture Recruitment Agency – Simple Tips

Leading horticulture recruitment specialist AndersPlus provide comment on the positive impact of foreign labour on the industry, and what considerations employers need to take into account when trying to recruit the best staff in a difficult market.

Skills Shortage

Down the ages, Britain’s culture and economy has benefited from a tradition of travelling the world and visiting distant lands to seek new ideas, cultures, methods and techniques, then bringing them back and making them our own. The days of empire building and great expeditions may be long gone, but our willingness to learn from other nationalities is now having a profound effect on our horticultural and agricultural industries. What began as a need to close the skills gaps by looking further afield for a skilled and available workforce has become an exchange of knowledge and techniques that will help the industry answer the challenges of increased demand and climate change.

The horticultural industry, similar to numerous other British industries such as education and healthcare, is experiencing the positive impact foreign labour is having on a sector starved of skills and manpower.

There are numerous areas of the industry where migrant workers are providing essential labour, both qualified and unqualified, including hard and soft landscaping, labourers, gardening, horticulture, agriculture and forestry.

But not only are they supplying an urgent service, they are helping to enrich the industry by introducing a diverse range of skills and horticultural traditions.

As a result, looking outside the UK for workers should not simply be about plugging a gap in the workforce, it should also be about employers considering that different nationalities have to offer in terms of skills and horticultural traditions, as well as the more mundane issues of work permits and legal requirements.Who, where, what…

At AndersPlus we have used statistical evidence based on our database of more than 7,000 workers to identify which nationalities make up what proportion of the workforce and the type of roles each national group tends to take.

Nearly half of all non-UK nationals working in the industry are Antipodeans, with Eastern Europeans, predominantly Polish and Slovakian, making up almost a third of the labour force. The remainder of the world constitutes the rest of the workforce.

When evaluating potential candidates for a particular role it is extremely beneficial to remember that some nationalities are particularly suited to specific areas of the industry thanks to their skill set and cultural heritage.

Australians, New Zealanders and South Africans are generally all qualified and appropriate for relevant roles including landscape architects, and hard landscaping with trade skills such as paving, decking and carpentry. New Zealanders specifically tend to fill roles in horticultural plants and nurseries as qualified maintenance gardeners and soft landscapers.

Western Europeans, mainly Spanish, French and Italian, are often very good gardeners and North Americans also tend to occupy this kind of role. The Spanish specifically also tend to specialise in forestry, and he French in soft landscaping.

Amongst the Eastern Europeans, the Polish have a good reputation for hard landscaping such as carpentry and paving, as well as for forestry, while the Czechs fill roles predominantly in nursery, gardening and forestry. Hungarians, meanwhile, are usually general gardeners or labourers, and the majority of Lithuanians and Slovakians take roles in agriculture and labouring.

Legal considerations

Now that you know who is most likely to be appropriate for the role, it is time to give consideration to the legal considerations of employing a worker from overseas. The prospect of employing workers from abroad can be daunting, and the complications involved can sometimes act as barriers, preventing companies from experiencing the benefits of using foreign labour.

English competency

A good level of English competency may seem like an obvious requirement, but with increasing health & safety legislation, a minimum level of understanding is of paramount importance. Inductions, presumably already part of the employment process, will need to consider foreign employees and their level of understanding, particularly when laws in their own country may differ, along with any culturally influenced work practices.

Work permits

Give consideration to the type of Visa or work permit requirements, such as how long, where and what type of work can be undertaken. For example, Bulgarians and Romanians can only work in UK on a self-employed basis.

Qualifications

As qualification standards and education systems differ across the globe it is essential to check relevant qualifications – where they were obtained, the criteria required to meet the standards and their comparability to UK standards and qualifications.

Commitment

Depending on your requirements it important to ascertain how long a potential candidate plans on staying in the UK and their level of commitment.

References

The best candidates will have readily obtainable references that have already been translated into English so ensure you request these.

The process of checking a candidate’s background can be complicated and this is an area where you can really reap the rewards of using an agency. A good agency will carry out all the necessary checks into work permits, qualifications and references before introducing a candidate and therefore it is only a matter of matching the right person with the job.

A day in the life…

Gavin Jones, a significant commercial landscaping and grounds maintenance company, has been employing a number of workers from overseas for more than 10 years, and have found this resource to be a valuable complement to their local labour force.

By using the combination of direct recruitment and agency assistance, the company now has a dynamic and motivated workforce, having addressed local skills gaps and labour shortages with workers from overseas particularly in the London Area. Throughout a seven-year relationship with the agency, Gavin Jones has consistently used AndersPlus when the company has large projects to be completed at short-notice and require a significant “instant” skilled labour force.

The company has found the use of labour from abroad to be a very positive experience and have generally found staff from overseas, often antipodeans in the London area, to be motivated and able workers. The seasonal nature of horticultural work tends to appeal to those who are working to fund their travels and Gavin Jones migrant workers often fill roles such as operatives (eg gardener) for anywhere between 2 months and 1 year; however there are examples of those who are able to commit for longer filling roles such as Foreman, Supervisor and a even a Contract Manager.

“Although we undertake our own assessment when recruiting,” comments Gavin Day from Gavin Jones, “It’s when we require labour at short notice that we really appreciate the benefits of using an agency. Working with the agency alleviates our liabilities in terms of checking visas, references and other details, reducing the complexities of using labour from overseas and helping us to fill any staff shortages within a very short period of time.”

Yard Landscaping

Home landscaping design is a very creative field, and you can experience an immense sense of satisfaction and self-fulfillment once you see your finished product.

By seeing the fruits of your labor on your lawn, you can learn that with enough hard work, innovation and creativity, you can have the perfect backyard or front lawn that will be the envy of your neighbors.

Here are some do-it-yourself landscaping your front yard tips:

1. Survey the general area that you want to landscape and make a plan.

Some home owners end up with a lousy front yard landscapingbecause they did not plan well. They just fill up any empty space with plants, without considering the aesthetic design.

For you to succeed in designing your lawn and front yard landscaping for your home, sit down and make a rough sketch. Assign areas where you would like to put the plants. Arrange them in such a way that there will be some order, without sacrificing the beauty of your surroundings.

If you plan to use garden furniture, place it in a strategic place where it will be enjoyed.

Remember to stick to your plan once it is finished.

2. Know the reason why you would like front yard landscaping for your lawn.

The main objective of residential landscaping is to maximize the potential of the excess land that you have. Some think that just because you have a grassy area outside the house, it would qualify as a landscaped lawn.

There are a lot of alternative landscaping designs that you can choose to beautify your surroundings.

3. Choose the proper theme for your landscape design.

Research which plants and trees and determine which are best for surviving the seasons of your area. There are shrubs that are appropriate and will do well in your lawn area during the summer season. During the autumn season, there are trees that you can plant that will show off the beauty of your garden.

Just imagine all the colors that will contribute to your landscape design if you select a plant, shrub, flower or tree that blooms or has colorful foliage and looks beautiful during each season of the year.

4. Once you have decided on the plants, make sure that you water them well.

One of the mistakes that homeowners have after they finish their landscape design is insufficient irrigation. Make sure that you water and fertilize your plants according to their needs.

If you are going to be away from home, have somebody do the watering for you. Otherwise, you will end up with an ugly, dried-out lawn and/or garden.

• To develop and organize the area around your home for maximum use and human satisfaction

• To create a harmonious visual relationship between your house and the yard.

• To minimize landscape maintenance to a more practical level.

Gardening Landscaping

Create a Landscape Design

So you goal has been set. The next thing you must do is to create the landscape design you want for your yard. This process can be way too easy if you have landscaping software. Nevertheless, you can use a piece of paper and colored pencils to begin sketching and designing your landscape. Here’s how:

• Create a simple, scaled drawing of the site. Sketch its utilities, walks, and driveways and note where paved surfaces are. Then, point out the areas where flower beds, patios, vegetable garden and play areas will be situated.

• By drawing arrows, indicate sun angles as well as prevailing winds for winter and summer. Make sure to circle the place in your yard that need wind protection or shade.

• Highlight areas where landscaping height or width is restricted. Also, emphasize the place where drainage is poor and the areas with standing water. Note also the trees and shrubs already existing in your yard.

While sketching your landscape design, consider the needs and habits of your family. Make a design that best satisfies not just their needs but their hearts’ desire. Discuss with your family the things they want to incorporate and prioritize the most important aspects.

Survey available Materials

Once you’ve come up with a fascinating design, what you need to do next is to review the materials needed and find out how much the whole project will cost. List down the price of all the materials you need to complete the project. These include benches, plants, rocks, the bricks and many more. Also, include in your computation the labor cost. When you already know how much you need to spend for your home landscaping, you can now decide when to push through with the project.

Those are the basic steps involved in every landscaping planning. So if you want a home that’s beautiful in and out, give it a good interior design matched with an attractive landscape. And in every landscaping project bear in mind that proper planning is the key.

Scrapbooking For Beginners: More Essential Tips

This article offers some practical advice on scrapbooking for beginners.

Photographs
Most scrapbooks will contain photographs. Even the most disinterested reader of your scrapbook will glance at the photographs. Pictures really are worth a thousand words. Therefore, it is vital to photographs that are of good quality and clearly illustrate your scrapbook theme.

Any photograph can be used in a scrapbook. Even instant photographs can be used in scrapbooking. Keep in mind that scrapbooking is permanent. Therefore, it is probably wise to use copies of your only picture of Great Grandma rather than risk ruining the photograph forever. Simply scan the picture on your computer scanner and print the image on lignin free and acid free paper.

Cutting and Cropping
Often photographs aren’t quite the right shape and size or the photographic image is improperly centered. Having oversized or off centered photographs creates an air of unprofessionalism. Carefully cropped and sized photographs, on the other hand, enhances the overall look and feel of your scrapbook.

There are two ways to solve these issues. The low tech way is to manually crop and shape the photograph using a pair of scissors or an exacto knife. If you are manually cropping and cutting pictures, make sure that you mark the outline you want with chalk (or eye shadow if you don’t have chalk) before you cut. Don’t forget the old saying, measure twice and cut once.

To manually change a distracting or cluttered background simply cut out the background and replace it with a with a new paper background. This allows the eye to focus on the people instead of the clutter behind them.

The high tech solution to your photograph woes is to use modern computer programs such as PhotoElements or Photoshop. Using one of these programs, photographs can be magically darkened, brightened, enlarged or cropped without ruining your original photograph. Some programs even allow you to change the background of the photograph.

Order
There are no specific rules stating that all photographs or mementos must be placed in chronological order. Therefore, it is completely up you the order you wish to place your items and embellishments. You can place your items in a formal chronological order. You can also group items into formal or informal categories such as similar colors, events, individuals, activities, or families. Items can also be placed into random, abstract, or collages.

Each order has its own place in scrapbooking. For example, chronological order might be best for an anniversary scrapbook. Pictures and mementos of the couple’s years together could be placed from the first day they met through the wedding day to the present day with each time period on a different page. This presents a feel of as time goes by.

However, a scrapbook for a parent might just have a collage of pictures and drawings. In this case, a collage lends to a feeling of overwhelmingly being loved.

I’m a great scrapbooking fan and I also love to face paint. On some occasions such as themed birthday partys and holidays such as Halloween I’m able to combine the too.

Making A Scrapbook: More Practical Tips

In this article you find some practical advice on scrapbooking for beginners.

Text
You may or may not want to add text to your scrapbook page. You may want to simply
write captions below the pictures. You may want to add your own stories or poems. You may want to add journals describing the day to day life of your baby or your child’s accomplishments. Text can be used as either a focal point or simply as a supporting piece.

Text may be hand written. Or, computer fonts, letters, text, or three-dimensional images can also be printed or cut and pasted onto the page. In this way, various styles, colors, textures, and visual text effects are possible.

Tags
Tags are a little added touch of professionalism that adds to the overall well thought out look to your scrapbook. Tags can be used for captions, accents, and thought bubbles as well as dedications. The design of your tags will depend entirely on your personal needs and desires.

Thus, tags can be large or small, square or specially shaped, white or colored, textured or plain.

Furthermore, tags need not be made of paper. Some of the most interesting tags are made from wood, fabric, and furniture odds and ends found around the house. Be creative.

Pre-made tags are available at most craft or office supply stores.

Embellishments
Your own unique embellishments add a special personal touch to your scrapbook pages. Embellishments can be used as the main focus of your page, to highlight items, or as borders. Embellishments can range from simple items such as stickers and ribbon to more complex techniques such as adding faux beads and silver accenting. Use your imagination and creativity.

Embellishments need not be expensive. Odds and ends that you have from other craft projects work just fine. Be on the lookout for sales on fabric, plastic flowers, lace, beads, and whatever else takes your fancy. These items will no doubt come in handy on your next scrapbook project. Also keep a sharp eye out for deals in second hand stores and garage sales. Often used items can be ripped apart and the pieces reused literally for only pennies.

Patterning
How can you arrange your scrapbook page to best show off your mementos and embellishments? You can place everything in the center of your page, place a single focus item in the center, or divide the page into sections adding items to each section. You may also decide to lay the items out in a standard recipe or calendar layout.

Shapes also make interesting placement patterns. Common shapes include squares, circles, stars and hearts. However, you can also place items in object patterns such as mountains, trains, or Christmas trees.

The shape you pick for your scrapbook will depend entirely on your theme. For example, a logical shape for a wedding or Valentines Day scrapbook is a heart. A nice shape for a Christmas scrapbook is a Christmas tree. You might make a cake pattern for your niece, the pastry cook. Let your imagination and creativity be your guide.

Various ready made patterning templates are available on the market.
