Below are some suggestions for kids party games. When planning the party pay close consideration to your choice of games. Some may not be suitable for all ages.
*Create A Mummy
Place the kids into teams of three to five children. Each team draws lots to see who will be the mummy. The other kids get toilet paper rolls. The first team to wrap up the mummy, leaving mouth, nose and eyes uncovered and to use all their toilet paper is declared the winner.
*Freeze
Put on some music. Avoid creepy sound effects if very young kids are attending the party. The kids start dancing. When the music stops the kids have to stand still. Anyone caught moving during the freeze is out of the game. A variation requires the children to strike a pose when the music stops. Before the music starts again they’re told what they must be when the music stops. It might be a cat, a pumpkin, bat etc.
*Pass The Pumpkin
This is a play on “pass the parcel”. The kids sit or stand in a circle. Play some suitable Halloween music and the kids start passing round the pumpkin. The child holding the pumpkin when the music stops is eliminated from the game. The game continues until only one child is left.
* Get The Zombies To Laugh
Get the kids to lie still and quiet on the floor. They are to be “zombies”. Tap one child on the shoulder. That tap releases them from being a zombie. That child is now “It”. “It” has the task of making the other children laugh by pulling funny faces, doing a funny dance, simply acting silly or whatever they like. The “zombies” have to try to remain still and not laugh. When a “zombie” laughs the child joins “It” in trying to get the rest of the group to laugh. The winner is the child who lasts the longest without laughing.
* The Wiggly Worm
The kids are divided into teams of equal numbers. Between 8 and 10 is best. Each team forms a line, one standing behind another. To make the worm the child at the front of each line puts their left hand between their legs and the child behind catches it with their right hand. This is repeated down the line. When you shout “go” the teams must run around a designated marker and back. The team that gets back to the starting line first wins. Naturally they must retain their “worm” shape.
* Witch Hunt
Before the party starts cut out a number of paper witch hats. Templates for this are readily available. It’s best to allow between 3 and 5 per invited child. Two of the hats should be colored green, the remainder black. Hide the hats around the house and backyard. Only hide them in areas of the house and yard where you are happy for the kids to explore. Begin the game by telling the kids that there are witches’ hats hidden and it is their task to discover as many as they can within a limited number of minutes. I like to divide the children into teams. Whoever discovers a colored hat receives a special prize and the team with the most hats also wins a prize. You could also give smaller prizes for the teams finishing 2nd and 3rd if you like.
Prizes for winning a game do not have to be candy. Other possibilities include homemade spooky faced cookies, a scary mask or Halloween themed pencils.
Halloween decorations for the house do not have be expensive. There are so many items you can make simply and cheaply at home.
An excellent method of limiting guests to certain areas of the house is to stick handmade “Keep Out – Haunted Room” banners across those rooms that you don’t want the guests to go into.
As already mentioned co-ordinating a Halloween costume with a face painting design really helps kids get into the party mood. And remember younger children generally don’t like anything too ghoulish. There are children’s face painting ideas no matter the age group. Make sure you practice your chosen Halloween face painting design before the day of the party.
Have a great Halloween party.
